no need for guidebooks

one things that was great about the camino was not having a guide book. there was no need for one as yellow arrows took you through the towns and past most forks in the road, but i would be lying if i said that we never got lost.

most of our 'lostness' seemed to happen the first couple days in Barcelona before actually hitting the trail, one of my favorites being on our last morning as we attempted to make our way to the mega bus terminal we had checked out the day before in order to secure our passage up to Jaca and on to Somport Pass where we would start our journeys...

we had been to the terminal the day before, so thought nothing of it as we looked at the underground transit map and planned our route. we were using the map but also running a lot on our memories, which i've come to realize are not that great with small directional city details. so we ended up getting off at a stop slightly earlier than required. but it brought us through an old Gaudi part of the city so we were stoked to see some very cool buildings we would have otherwise missed. so after capitalizing on the photo opportunities we started walking, fast, in an attempt to catch the bus we had carefully planned out to take. eventually realizing that where we thought the bus terminal was actually wasn't and we were way off base. so rather than get back on the underground transit, Tim speaks up and suggests that since we're going to be walking for the next four weeks anyways, why not start now?

and so the camino began, in the middle of barcelona, as we made our way to the main bus depot. hot, sweaty, and definitely deserving of an ice cold coke at the end of it all. which was of course followed by a second coke as we had surely missed the bus we had planned on taking and had 5 hours to enjoy before the next one left.

  1. Gaudi's designs were a fantastic highlight and it was wonder full to be surprised by several on our last day in Barcelona. Remember the day before, getting off at the wrong bus stop on our way to Gaudi's park? As a result we entered the park from the top of the hill and descended down to where the throngs were getting off busses. It's a great city to get lost in. Daniel
