any book, blog or blurb you read about the camino includes the word "blisters" at least once and usually with much more descriptive or explicit descriptors around it. there have even been t-shirts made cartooning the agony of many a pilgrim who have set out with brand new boots! with that in mind, even though I'm taking old shoes I've worn for years, I have been going on "practice hikes" to make sure they're still up to par. what I've come to realize though is that it's not the shoes that need to be broken in, really, it's my feet. from hiking shoe to flip-flop, I'm slowly adding blisters and callouses one at a time so that when I hit the trail there's not a stretch of fresh skin left to protest, just seasoned soles happily obliged to carry me along.
