my dad's love of juice

you learn a lot about someone when you travel with them. i lived with my dad for five months up until our departure and i had no idea how much he loved juice; but once we hit the trail it all became pretty clear.

we'd enter a grocery store in the afternoon and he would buy three cartons insisting that we needed to rehydrate. and everytime, we'd get through one, he'd be "forced" to drink the second on his own, and the third would end up in a backpack as we departed the next morning before dawn.

don't get me wrong, i like a little juice in the morning too, and it really is lovely on the trail, but when you've been extremely careful to reduce the weight of your pack down to 12 pounds so that it's the scenery you're focussing on every day rather than sore shoulders, an extra litre of juice can throw a bit of a kink in your back.

nevertheless, my dad's giddy excitement and extreme happiness every time we pulled out the juice made the extra weight worth it, and the extra weight a pure joy. and yes, that is fanta soda pop he is drinking at 6:00am in the photo. he had informed us that he had picked up some juice for the morning the night before. i informed him that "3% zumo" (spanish for juice) is not juice...but we all took a swig anyways.
